Does importing a lib file permanently add the library to KiCad, or do i need to keep the downloaded file for later use?

Hello,
KiCad does not support embedded libraries that you load once and are part of a project. You need to keep a physical copy on your hard disk.
KiCad reads the files every time you place a component on the schematic or transfer it to the PCB. Technically you can delete the physical copy once you finish the project, but it is not advisable in case you need to update your design.
You can add libraries globally for every project or locally for the current working project (footprints only).
Our recommendation: If you think you'll only use the component once, save it inside a project folder and add it in KiCad for the current project. When it is a common component that you're likely to use on many projects, save it in a master component folder and add it globally.
