I've seen threads about this for previous versions, but since the interface has changed since then, the solutions provided don't work for KiCad 7. For some reason KiCad 7 won't recognize the footprint file I downloaded from here, but it does recognize the symbol.

Hello, no error appears. You just can't select the file. I was able to use it after I opened the file in footprint editor and saved again to the project folder. Maybe it has to do something with the linux version of KiCAD.

Hello there!
Thanks for reaching out! May we ask for the part number that you tried importing on Kicad 7? From there, our team will investigate and see if we can reproduce this.
Also, to clarify, were you able to follow the import guide below?

Hello Anthony,
This is Carlos stepping in for Ron. Can you please close and reopen KiCad to see if the part uploads?
If the issue persists, please send us screenshots of what appears after adding the FFC3B07-18-T folder to the footprint library. to [email protected], so we can check this issue more in-depth.

I have the same problem with the part TCRT5000. Kicad simply doesn't accept the file to be selected.

Hello again, alidevrimo,
The team could import TCRT5000 by following the following instructions: https://support.snapmagic.com/en/articles/5995733-how-to-import-into-kicad-v6-and-later
If the issue persists, please send us a screenshot of the error that appears after adding the part to the footprint library at [email protected], so we can further check on it.

Thanks for letting us know! Was the footprint assigned to Global libraries in both?
Answered 1 year, 3 months ago.
No, I use my libraries project specific. I read your guide and I think I found the problem. For the schematics, the KiCAD directly opens the file, but for the footprints, it expects the folder of the footprint. Even when I gave the folder it didn't open. So I saved it with the footprint editor and it saved the footprint inside a folder called "TCRT5000.pretty" and it worked this time. Even when it was inside a folder it wasn't showing up in footprints. But when I saved from the footprint editor it worked somehow. Maybe related with the folder name or something. I think it is a bit buggy. This is weird since I've always selected the footprint file itself to include it in any project. But this time it didn't select at all. Maybe related with the KiCAD 7 version. Let's see how it will turn out on KiCAD 8.

Thank you for sharing your insight! Typically, this issue is related to the naming and location of the folder. And indeed, one way to ensure that the footprint can be opened is by following the steps you have taken.
Please reach back if you need anything else, we'd be happy to help!
